Michael Blake (born July 5, 1945) is an American writer, best known for his novel Dances with Wolves also a film in a eponymous film.

Early in his life, Michael Blake lived in Texas before moving to Southern California. He began writing in the newspaper of Walker Air Force Base. He studied journalism at the University of New Mexico, and then studied at film school in Berkeley, California. He also attended Eastern New Mexico University . In late 1970 he moved to Los Angeles. Kevin Costner convinced him to write Dances with Wolves, and then a screenplay for the film based on the novel. Since then, he devoted himself to humanitarian work, and continued writing.
